I never thought it would happen to me.

Submitting to sexual assault to save your life or avoid physical damage or because you panicked and were scared does not make it any less a crime.  Submission is not consent.

But I thought I knew that person...

50% of sexual assaults happen in homes of victims and in over 60% of sexual assaults the offender is known.

The Battered Woman

"Once he beat me when our son got the measles.  He said it was my fault -- that I wasn't a good mother."

Women are beaten because dinner is to slow, to hot, too cold, or not "properly" prepared.  Women are beaten because they are there.

"He's careful never to hit me in the face so I can usually hide the bruises."  Mattie is a 63 year old homemaker.  She as been married to Curtis, a retired doctor, for 40 years.

A batterer is found in all socio-economic levels and all professions.  Battering is a generational problem.  A young boy who watches his father beat his mother learns how to beat his wife.  Home is often the training ground for violent behavior.

RAPE IS A CRIME OF VIOLENCE...NOT SEX

The motivation is anger -- and the psychological impact on the victim is the most severe of ANY crime.  Rapists prey on anyone, regardless of age, race or socio-economic status.  It is painful ... it is flustrating ... it is humiliating... yet only 1 in 10 are reported.  And it is not only a crime, it is a crisis -- a violent and explosive interruption in a human life!

SEXUAL ABUSE of children by adults (or older children) is a widespread problem -- 1 in 3 will be sexually abused by the age of 18 -- and 80% by someone known to the child.  Boys are victimized almost as often as girls; it can happen to any child, at any time, any where.

WE OFFER THESE SERVICES:
  • Crisis intervention - support to victims regardless of whether or not they prosecute.
  • Follow up - for the families and victims (adult and child) of immediate and past rape and sexual abuse.
  • Accompaniment - through all phases of police, medical and court procedures.
  • Professional training sessions - for law officers, medical staff, social workers, clergy and teachers.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

THE SINGLE MOST UNREPORTED CRIME IN THE COUNTRY

Abuse occurs everywhere -- in suburbs, rural areas, the inner city, among families of varied backgrounds, religious and social status.  But it is estimated only 1 in 10 episodes is reported.  15,000,000 to 28,000,000 women (according to the F.B.I.) are repeatedly abused, often suffering serious physical harm.

SHELTER FOR ABUSED WOMEN AND CHILDREN

For women, and their children, who have been abused by their spouse or partner, the shelter will provided a warm and protective environment where they can stay temporarily to make decisions for their future.

  • Trained crisis intervention volunteers
  • Emergency shelter
  • Support services
  • Court-related services, accompaniment and help in filing documents
  • Referrals for legal and medical help
  • Community education

Liberal Area Rape Crisis / Domestic Violence Service can provide your organization, school, agency or professional association with a variety of interesting and informative programs.  These are presented by both staff and specially trained volunteers, in the areas our agency serves: Sexual Assault (including Child Sexual Abuse); and Domestic Violence (and the Shelter).

The programs, of varying length and appropriate for a variety of age groups, from small children to adults, are provided at no charge.
